Welcome to Aaron Johnson
Paintings and Woodcuts

My lifelong love of Nature is the primary impetus for my work as an artist. My paintings and prints are a visual exploration of the world around us and of our human relationships within it.

The paintings are divided into two categories: Trees presents a series of tree portraits and Stories displays paintings that explore our human connections with nature. The Woodcuts page shows recent examples of my work as a printer. I use the traditional medium of oil on linen canvas for my paintings and bring twenty years of letterpress printing experience to the production of my woodcuts. Both techniques require patience, but encourage a slower more contemplative way of looking than is common in our daily lives.

Biographical information and my résumé may be found at About the Artist. Information about contacting me or purchasing work may be found on the Contact page.

News

A selection of my woodcuts are on exhibit at Ironwood, 1121 Soquel Ave, Santa Cruz, and at the Oakland Museum's Collector's Gallery, 1000 Oak Street, Oakland.

The woodcut Cypress Cove, Point Lobos received a purchase award at the 2008 Delta National Small Prints Exhibition.

The Foolscap Press recently published a limited edition of Ursula Le Guin's story "Direction of the Road" with one of my woodcut prints as an illustration. More information on the Woodcuts page.

Each October I participate in the "Open Studios Art Tour" sponsored by the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County, when nearly 300 artists open their studios to the public to show their work and methods. At other times of year you are welcome to call (831)761-5848 to arrange a visit to my studio.

Woodcuts may be ordered by phone. Credit cards are now accepted and shipping is free. Or, pick up your woodcut at my studio and receive a free frame.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Aaron
